Baby Boomers Want a New Challenge

Baby Boomers Want a New Challenge

By Daryl Ballard

The baby boomers generation is know for enjoying work and not wanting to retire. In polls they are about twice as likely to say they want to keep working past the age 65 as the generations just younger than them. The fact that they are closer to retirement and may have thought more about the meaning of their lives could be one reason. But the numbers are still striking. Could there be other reasons?

Baby boomers have always said they get a lot of personal satisfaction out of working. But they certainly don't have the reputation of unselfishness and the work three jobs to make ends meet ethic that their parents had. They have always lived in prosperity and relative peace (at least in the US). This probably explains the differences between them and the preceding generation who weathered the great depression and two world wars. But what makes them different form those born after 1964.

Baby boomers want to change their community

Whether it is feeling inferior to the greatest generation or something else, the baby boomer generation shows a strong need to leave a legacy. The generation is known for its desire to make a big difference in the communities where they live. Many are not satisfied just living out their days providing for themselves and their family.

Baby boomers tend to define themselves by what they do for a living, whereas Gen Xers and later identify themselves more by their free time pursuits or hobbies. The baby boomer generation may be looking to change the traditional job as they approach retirement so they can continue working.

Businesses are becoming more creative with hours and workplace in response. This makes things more flexible for an aging workforce and may provide cost savings for the business as well.

The home-based business is where baby boomers are headed

I predict there will also be a boom in home-based businesses as well. This is especially true as the internet changes the way we do business and changes the face of home-based and network marketing ventures.

As our economy slows and we try to work out the problems of funding Social Security and Medicare, this could be a very positive thing. Retirement may look very different in 10 years with people working form home and products being marketed from home. It might be a great time to analyze the future and decide if there is a place for you in an internet home business.
